Perhaps Chavez appeared to be better than the alternatives, and has provided enough to some of the people to make supporting him better than supporting the alternative. If so, leaving him in position, people always want more, will eventually make it easier to align with the US than with Iran. OTOH the US should stop trying to unseat him. Sending aid to his enemies only makes it harder to become friends.
