There are so many regressive taxes that poor people still pay a huge percentage of their income in taxes. I pay probably 40% taxes, when you add up all the different taxes, fees and assessments. Sales tax hits the poor harder than the rich, in terms of percentage of income. Sales taxes should be the lowest taxes possible. Income tax is the best way to spread the burden amongst the people in an equitable way. Bush tax relief to high incomes simply finds it way into the people's pockets by increased sales taxes, property taxes and other fees. He takes the most progressive means of taxation and turns it in to regressive taxes.
