I think the fact that the thread stayed away from US politics helped- it really was foreign affairs- and the US political bullshit didn't intrude so often,

That's a very tall order in an age when the US is supposed to be transforming the globe to secure the homeland. Partisanship has rarely stopped at the water's edge in practice. Now we have one party trying to base most of their fall campaign on international security topics.

I agree with this. But, as I just said in my post to Dale, I think the old FADG was a creature of its times. It's not possible to do that today, at least not with the wide base of points of view that thread contained.

Politics is all hard edges now. I tend to blame the Bush people for it; but it's origins were in Gingrich's desire to vault the house republicans out of their minority status by going confrontational. The Bush people simply took one of many strands of political behavior and made it the dominant one.
