JF, Well, since that doesn't seem to be a problem in the other "rich countries" that have national health insurance, I assume you think it's a character issue with the US consumer?

Personally, I think it's an issue with the medical profession, since it's the doctors who have to write these prescriptions. The patients, or "consumers," just watch the TV commercials and convince themselves that they need the drugs. Then they'll go ask their doctors to write a prescription for them, then ask their health insurance to pay for it. They don't know any better because they didn't go through four years of pre-med, four years of med school, and three years of residency. It's the doctors who are telling them, "Sure, it's OK, I'll write the prescription for you," but they don't bother investigating with their patients whether an alternative form of treatment may be better.

It's pretty simple... the countries with single payer medical care get equivalent or better results for 20% to 50% less money. You can nuance it to death, but those are the facts.

I guess it's case closed for you then, huh? Seems like you're addicted to the idea of a single payer health care system. No discussion over an inconvenient "nuance" like the overprescription of drugs, because "that doesn't seem to be a problem in the other 'rich countries' that have national health insurance." Typical head-in-sand mentality.
