There was no communism as we know it in 1940. The name "communism" meant something totally different than the Soviet Union turned it into. And the Great Depression made communists out of the majority of Americans. But way back then communism was actually a great ideal. It simply meant working together and being fair to working people.

When the Soviets and Chinese turned commnunism into a military dictatorship it became just as bad as fascism. That was a stark dividing line, but the same word was used to describe almost opposite political ideals.

Way back in 1940, "communist" just meant you were for worker's rights (against exploitative monopolies and robber barons of industry), the ability to organize for fair wages, a little civil rights and maybe peace.

One of the big lies of the rightwing has been to not distinguish between later fascist type communism of the Soviets (which we are all against) and the early communist ideal which simply means to share, not hoard, and work toward the common good. That is, people power. Which saved millions of Amerifcans coming out of the Great Depression which the greedy captains of industry caused.
