Hardened doors do more to protect the planes and pilots than anything else, the principal investment for the airlines. They also stave off awful publicity for the industry like multiple hijackings by terrorists in a single day. The US airlines remind me a lot of US carmakers; they get innovative once a generation then it's dumb, fat and happy until the next crisis sucks them down into the red. After my recent experiences flying US domestic carriers I would happily see all four majors go belly up and redivide the spoils among some eager younger players.
