"The Mormons moved West a few times. It seems like they left Illinois or Indiana for Utah. It seems like it was when locals there expressed displeasure with Joseph Smith's polygamy."

They got started in New York. There were several westward migrations. While polygamy was certainly an issue, the real reason they were not tolerated was their success and clannishness. Their hard work and tight social structure let them advance quickly, and they were the "rich folks" in their communities, and didn't share their wealth with non-Mormons.

Envy and jealosy were the real reason for the migrations. Polygamy was just another "difference" to justify chasing them out of broader non-Morman communities.
