A Dhaka court Sunday sentenced five Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) activists to 78 years' rigorous imprisonment for possessing illegal firearms, ammunition and explosives. Judge Mohammad Rabiul Hassan of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court handed down the verdict in the presence of the convicts: Wahidul Islam, 20, Shafiqul Islam, 30, Hafez Ibrahim, 30, Abdullah Al Faruq, 21, and Hanif, 22. The court awarded 54 years' rigorous imprisonment for possessing illegal firearms, ammunition and 34 years' rigorous imprisonment for possessing explosives, The Daily Star reported. The Dhaka High Court last week handed over death warrants to top JMB leaders, including Shaikh Abdur Rahman and Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, for being involved in a conspiracy to cause explosions that killed two judges. Another court in Bangladesh's capital is to deliver the verdict in a case filed against JMB military commander Ataur Rahman Sunny and five others in connection with explosion of an estimated 500 bombs Aug 17 last year. The series of judgments convicting Islamist extremists is aimed at curbing terrorism. They are supported by the government as its legal and judicial machinery has moved swiftly to conduct investigations and trials. Critics of the government, however, say this is aimed at wooing the public at home and impressing human rights bodies and media, both at home and abroad, ahead of the parliamentary elections.
