Ditto here - we went through that topic at length some time back, distinguishing between Marxism, European social democracy and American liberalism.

The people who care about the difference already know it, and those who don't will never listen when they can just slap on pejorative labels instead.

Well, I think you can make an argument to include Marx in the larger political philosophy that streams, historically, toward the present stances of the American left. But it's not "rooted" in Marxism.

It's as much "rooted" in Locke and Mills as in Marx. And there's more than a little of New England transcendentalism, John's Dewey's progressivism, etc.

Marx is in the mix just not the basic ingredient.
