If you compare the Mona Lisa's breast size in the painting to recently discovered medical documents, it indicates she must have been lactating. Using anti-weathering color analysis, you can also see small stains on her right shoulder which likely came from regurgitated milk. Cross-referencing the brightness of the daylight with normal baby sleep patterns as well as local maternal customs, one can also conclude the Mona Lisa's baby was sleeping in a cradle in Leonardo's studio while she was posing. Thus, her gaze and expression were likely the result of being fixated on her infant as he lay in his cradle. - Jeff (newly self-titled Mona Lisa expert)

Menu said a number of art historians had suggested that she was pregnant or had just given birth. Anyone you know? Nope. It's not a new theory. In the past, some have suggested that she has the look of zoned-out contentment typical of mothers-to-be. I don't really think so. Back when I wrote about the portrait I looked into the family, and though I haven't checked again I don't think she had any children at that time. As for the veil they describe, I'm sure it's there, but I'm not sure it's meaningful. Leo liked to play with difficult technical effects, and that's what he may have been doing here. After all, it's unlikely that the Moaning L was sitting around his studio every day wearing the same thing. Probably he worked mostly from sketches and only had her there when he was working on her face.
