One rightwing big lie is that Reagan ended the Cold War.
Hannity types keep repeating that over and over, and their justification is HUGE DEFENSE SPENDING on the MX Missile and Star Wars, two programs which are now proven to be HUGE WASTES OF MONEY. In fact Star Wars and SDI have never worked despite over 150 billion spent. And the MX Missile was just madness, sheer insanity, a sick joke.

Yes Reagan deserves some credit, but he's not #1 on the list. #1 on the list is Gorbachev, Lech Walesa and every liberal Soviet citizen who risked his/her life to stand up the the military dictatorship which has totally perverted the concept of communism and lied to their people since day one.

#2 on the list were the Europeans especially the Germans who offered huge amounts of money to take on East Germany. Europeans were also on the forefront of the No-Nukes movement which really did get through to Soviet citizens. And Chernobyl also made a big impact. So the Hannity idea that nuclear build-up beat the Soviets is untrue. Just the opposite is true. Or maybe they both are.

#3 Was a tie between rock n' roll free-loving youth and the church, including Judaism, which were the first real diplomats inside the Soviet Union from the US. Both youthful hippy freedoms of expression and religious freedom had been forbidden.

#4 I would say were both Carter and Reagan. Carter set it up and Reagan follow through. Bravo to both of them.

#5 Ironically, the Mujeheddin including Bin Laden who defeated (with our CIA's help) the Soviets in Afghanistan. That particularly costly war was similar to Vietnam or Iraq, a real debacle which brought the idea of Soviet military supremacy to its knees. Only after Afghanistan were Reagan's threats of outrageous defense spending effective. because the Soviet military by then was feeling spent.
