It was a bit more than oppression in East Timor Hawk. It was a significant population reduction by Moslems of the East Timorese. en.wikipedia.org Imagine being colonized by Portugal! Not even a useful language [other than for holidays to Brazil and Mozambique] Then Japan killed a whole lot. Then Portugal got it back. Then Indonesia took over. Constant carnage.

Oppression is what I get from Helengrad. It's what the Catholics say they got in Northern Ireland [not favoured for government perk jobs or something] before "The Troubles" which were just IRA murder.

Kissinger [being Jewish] figured that the USSR socialist aspect of East Timor [which was not Jewish] was worse than the Islamic Jihad aspect of Indonesia. A green light from the USA is a great temptation - Saddam fell for it from April Glaspie who you would understand wasn't making it up on the spot [poor sucker that he was]. The Shah fell for it too.

Interesting about the oil border dispute. I don't know what the rules are on national ownership of sea. I had thought it's a matter of continental shelf, and half-way in other instances such as between Taiwan and China [islands being important as they can push "half-way" a lot close to the other party].

Australia is like a mini-USA, so I suppose they figure East Timor's oil is theirs in the same way that USA Hummer drivers think Iraq's oil is theirs.

A healthy NewUN would easily resolve such problems.

Mqurice

PS: It wasn't secession from Indonesia and Indonesia never actually owned East Timor. I don't think the UN recognized the conquest and occupation approved by Kissinger. But maybe I'm wrong. <The territory was declared the 27th province of Indonesia in July 1976 as Timor Timur. Its nominal status in the UN remained that of a "non-self-governing territory under Portuguese administration." >

Oppression of Christians in East Timor in 1975 wasn't even an issue. Islam did not have any significant political influence on the Suharto regime in 1975.

Indeed, some of the political parties requesting annexation were headed by Christians and had substantial Christian membership.

Mq's just throwing in the Islamic angle to tweak us. It's one of those manipulations of fact that doesn't hold up under scrutiny, like the argument that Osama bin Laden is a creature of the CIA, rather than an independent actor in the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

Note that both accusations have something in common -- the Communists lost, and Communists have zero credibility when talking about world politics. The ends always justify the means, which includes lying.

Not that Mq's a liar, he's either a dupe or just tweaking us because he doesn't like to be reminded that New Zealand's been de-balled.

If New Zealand is ever invaded, the Kiwis can hit the invaders with their purses. ;^)
