We don't need any other enemies with this new brand of Democrat, who tries to destroy their own government merely for their own selfish desire for power.

Reagan did not bring down communism, Gorbachev and the Soviet people did, with a set-up from Carter who was an excellent diplomat and thawed a lot of tensions. Reagan presided over the fall of communism in the Soviet Union, but when he came into power things were already sliding fast in that direction.

The big rightwing lie is that Reagan ended communism by over-spending on ridiculous programs like Star Wars and the MX-Missile. While some feel that may have scared the Soviet military leaders, their defeat in Afghanistan was a much bigger blow. But mainly it was because about 75% of the Soviet people wanted freedom, and West Germany was willing to foot the bill for East Germany if the Soviets let it go. Also Lech Walesa's brave stand freed Poland. And rock n' roll and the young generations's cry for peace and freedom strongly influenced the young Russians. As did the church and Jews. They were actually the first ones in behind the Iron Curtain trying to tear it down. Reagan actually came in last, and his Berlin Wall speech took place after communism had already fallen.

Reagan deserves some credit, but so does Carter. Mostly though it was Gorby and the new generation of liberal Soviet leaders who had their peoples' support against the military industrial complex, and that included the anti-Nukes movement, particularly after Chernobyl. Reagan's arms build up was irrelevant to the Soviet people. They didn't even know about it. Nor did they care.
