His previous campaigns were pretty much 'cake walks' against lightly regarded opponents.

Still... one would have thought that the yearbook photo with the confederate flag lapel pin... the confederate flag on his living room wall at home, the confederate flag and the noose he hung in his office when Governor... the photo he took with the white racist organization when running for State office... his opposition as Governor to a MLK holiday (but his statement in support of a confederate heritage official State holiday... which completely failed to even mention racism as a factor in the Civil War) might just have *prepared the ground* a bit for folks to --- perhaps not so 'unreasonably' at that --- draw the conclusion that Allen held some bigoted beliefs....

Not so unreasonable to suspect, I fear....
