"It's obvious one of the reasons the Mormons adopted polygamy was in order to quickly populate their narrow world at the time."

Possibly, Ann, but I doubt it. Polygamy, I think, was adopted as a common Mormon practice before they left New York. As they moved West, there were disproportionately more men than women. Verile men weren't a shortage item on the frontier.

"If you're suggesting the men were never lured by the idea of creating harems for themselves..."

Nope, I'm making no such suggestion. Nor do I suggest that all polygamous people (not just men) are altruistic. What I did, and am, suggest is that such arrangements were, and possibly still are, considered as a reasonable way to deal with people who couldn't care for themselves in society.

I'm considerably less eager than you to label all men as licentious.

"When the topic is introduced in mixed company, most men chuckle and admit it's one of their fantasies."

Jokingly, perhaps. If they are in any way serious, I'd question the company you keep.

"I'm amazed at the financial burden for each household..."

BINGO!! The true crux of the matter.

"However, I remember reading somewhere that many of the excess wives and their children collect welfare checks. Are you aware if that's true?"

No, I have no idea. But if that is in fact true, then the AGs in the involved states will have a lot of prosecuting to do for charges of fraud.
