Wind knocked from supporters' sails

ALBANY - After former Westchester District Attorney Jeanine Pirro dropped her U.S. Senate bid and entered the attorney general race, Republicans placed high hopes on her in a year when their other horses seem headed for defeat.

Pirro's revelation yesterday, that authorities are investigating her for allegedly conspiring to bug her husband, Albert, derailed much of the optimism.

"It seems she has has a bad streak of luck," said Stanley Klein, a political scientist at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus who is also a Republican committeeman in Huntington. "Maybe she shouldn't run."


Pirro, who has also served as a judge, has been viewed by political analysts as Republicans' best chance for victory in a year when the public mood appears to be favoring Democrats.
