Seems to me the key issue in the discussion that ensued was that both left and right will use government for redistribution, based on their own goals. The supposed connection between Marx's war on capitalists and Democratic policy wasn't much more than one of those tenuous spider web strands, any more than Cheney really wants to be the reincarnation of Himmler.

Perhaps the blogger should have asked, what does the center do when both parties believe in big government, simply for their own ends? Then the center would have to come up with a vision for a more moderate government that serves a broad consensus of society rather than a partisan base on the left or the right.

I know the libertarians have an answer for that question but I don't see it capturing much attention.

That would be a useful discussion, IMHO. Throwing around misguided, unfounded labels like Marx and Nazis is not. It's just more fun for most posters and bloggers.
