I don't quite understand the fuss. The word "nigger" was part of the common vernacular up until the mid-80s. There are/were a lot of common sayings employing the word, and it was common even on television and in movies through the 50s. "Redskin" was another such word, people didn't think much about it.

To use today's sensibilities to judge the insensitivity of yesteryear doesn't make much sense.

I have heard that, but who knows the real reason. Could have been a joke. All I am saying is football team players are usually very close and Southern teams are predominately black. No one IMHO could survive on such a team if he were a racist. Secondly, 36 YEARS AGO. Hell, Byrd was HEAD of the KKK in his state in the old days. jdn
