It is not a crime to lie to the "police". All the cop shows in which you mention you see are STATE police!!!

The law is FEDERAL. The law is and always has been 18 USCA sec. 1001. It prohibits giving false information to a FEDERAL AGENT.

It has been around and has been used in about 3000 cases a year for the past 30 years.

If for instance you lie on you "home" loan app telling the bank that you are going to live their and then try to flip the home, everything will be alright IF!!!!! it works AND the bank gets paid the loan plus their attorney fees.

If, say, the market turns, which of course it NEVER will, and you don't pay the bank, you will find out the meaning of 1001 pretty fast. (the loan app goes to a federal agency plus the bank which is considered a "Federal agency").

This is one of many rules that trip people up who don't know how to play.
