Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with nursing homes and assisted living facilities. My father spent his last 13 months in a nursing home. He didn't know where he was and thought it was a hospital. He had no concept of time. And, yes, I did notice how many of the residents were smokers. My dad wasn't. My mom is now in assisted living (a small step above nursing care) but still not a pretty site. They don't allow smoking in the building, so it's like the grocery store - you have to wallow through a smoke screen at the front door just to get into the building.

I recently lost a 50 year old friend to lung cancer. She smoked for 35 years. Her attitude just before she died was "What the Hell?" So, I guess she knew what she was doing to herself.
