Re: "But think of the great meteor showers when those ball bearings reenter the atmosphere!"

The 'keg of nails' defense to an ABM system was first publicly pointed out (first time that I'm aware of) in the 1980s by the American Academy of Sciences.

(Though I'm sure the Pentagon and N.R.O. experts have been aware of it for a much longer time.)

Yeah... 'meteor showers' would be GREAT NEWS but, the problem is, that those sats are parked in geo-synchronous orbits (where they can STAY for a long time without use of fuel) and, unfortunately, ball bearings or trash launched in the same orbit would ALSO be parked there a LONG, LONG Time --- rendering those orbits UNUSABLE for sats for perhaps hundreds of years.

And, by launching the keg of nails' in COUNTER-rotation to the sats... the ball bearings would have HUGE kinetic energies... a hit from even a single one would disable or destry a sat.... and the damage in those orbits would linger.

Yep... 'Keg 'o Nails' is a more serious (even though 'lower tech') threat then even the laser threat that was posted.
