for five years failed to bring Osama bin Laden to justice even though they had him cornered at Tora Bora --they yanked our special forces out of there to send them into Iraq.

This is a universally believed Liberal meme. I had an exchange of PMs on this very subject with JohnM a couple of months ago, and couldn't shake him.

There is a bit of truth in this statement, but it is garbled. I have read the two books that cover this period, "First In," which covers our set up period there, and "Jawbreaker," which covers the period to the end of 2001.

The CIA had Osama on the run and in the mountains in Nov/Dec 2001. Centcom refused to put any troops in to block the Al Qaeda forces that were escaping though Tora Bora. Tommy Franks was the one who made the decision. The request was for a Ranger Battalion, about 800 troops. It never got above his pay grade. The Northern Alliance and the Pakistani forces let Osama go. Combination of friendship and payoff.

No troops were diverted to Iraq. More troops would never have got him later and wouldn't get him now. He and his people are on the Afghan/Pakistan border, "swimming with the fish."
