CHRT Chartered Semi: Asia checks indicate weak 4Q06/1Q07 shipment outlook - Thomas Weisel (7.63 -0.09)

Thomas Weisel says the major Asian foundries describe current business outlook as weak in all major customer segments as they expect this weakness to slow rev growth at CHRT in 4Q06 and Y07. In the PC segment, firm says excess inventory continues to weigh on foundry orders (25% of CHRT 2Q06 rev), where customer overbuild in 1H06 proved most severe. In the consumer segment (39% of rev), firm says checks indicate considerable excess inventory in maturing product categories such as DSC and MP3 players, with pre-holiday inventory build failing to spur foundry-level 2H06 demand. While firm continues to believe that AMD business at CHRT will increase in 4Q06, they do not believe the strength will fully offset ongoing weakness in the XBox 360 CPU business for IBM. Communications (34% of rev), contains notable pockets of near-term growth. Firm remains confident in the co's ability to achieve above-peer reve growth of 21% in Y07 (vs. 12% for peers).

Many analysts say the increase isn't sustainable.
The SNDK board is probably a superior source compared to WSJ.
As cos such as Samsung Electronics, Hynix Semiconductor and Toshiba boost capacity in their quest to gain more share of the NAND flash-memory mkt, many analysts are concerned about a potential glut in the first half of 2007, even though they remain upbeat about the rest of this year. "
So "many analysts" are concerned about first half but "many analysts" are upbeat about the rest of this year - so they expect "hockey stick" recovery ? that's what is implied - correct?
in the meantime SNDK short interest is bloating like a carcass in the desert - thanks for posting WSJ blurb - study your enemies - adopt their "thinking pattern" and act accordingly.
