I don't think it's at all about Saddam any more. It's about who is going to control Iraq now.

My thought process is that the story was about Sunnis, a minority, killing Shias, allegedly for their involvement with the US. How can Sunnis even hope to control Iraq again, without Saddam?

Their best hope (whether they see this or not) if Saddam doesn't come back, is to form coalitions with other minorities in the Iraqi parliament, or strive for an Iraq not governed according to Shia vs. Sunni lines.
