The country of Eire existed apart from British Rule before the second world war. They even offered aid to the Nazi's for a time. OTOH the war has continued in Northern Ireland until only recently. And it was/is about just what i said. The problem with British rule was that the British were protestant and the Irish were Catholics. You had the same battles here in North America where the Catholics were opposed by the Orange Lodge.
