Bush heaps praise on controversial Central Asian leader

kvoa.com

WHITE HOUSE President Bush has been lavishing praise on a controversial Central Asian leader.

Welcoming Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev (nur-sul-TAHN' nah-sahr-BAH'-yev) to the White House, Bush hailed him as a loyal ally in the war on terror. And the president lauded Nazarbayev for his commitment to enabling "liberty to flourish."

Human rights groups charge Nazarbayev is a tyrant, who rigged elections last December in which he got 91 percent of the vote. And they say his security forces assassinated a leading political foe two months later.

In recent speeches, Bush has said the central focus of U-S foreign policy is promoting democracy.

Meantime, Kazakhstan's a growing oil-producer. During his Oval Office visit, Nazarbayev told reporters his country and America have become "close partners" in energy and trade.
