I live alone and have for some 11 years now. My 2 kids are in their late 40's and live in different states. I no longer keep pets. So, my mess is of my own making. Which means I pick up after myself as I go. I find lately I'll hand wash the few dishes from a meal. If not, I will run out of knives and forks before other stuff. I only run my dishwasher about once a week. I like the idea of them being cleaner than by hand.

I also don't cook as much as I used to. I only eat twice a day and morning is a couple oatmeal cookies dunked in my coffee. Snacks a couple times a day are nuts or crackers. My second meal is early and often a Lean Cuisine (unless I eat out). I just don't have the appetite I once did.

But, I still have to run the vacuum and dust. I think dusting is about the worst job I have to do. It is NEVER done!
