I don't think that the ones who picked up the stones were the ones who were putting their hope in Jesus and His message. And remember that the followers of Jesus at that time were not born again. No one could be born again until Jesus was crucified and then ascended into heaven. Then 40 days later the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles on the day of Pentecost. That day is the first day that anyone was born again and filled with the Holy Spirit according to the Word.
