I doubt (knock on wood) we'll see the former two scenarios, but a regional war is definitely a possibility should we not manage to stabilize Iraq intact. But let the US and the West just ignore the socio-economic and demographic conditions in the Islamic world, and/or permit Jihadist militant ideology to permeate the mideast, and we might just see that war of civilizations.. There's a tremendous gap between the Islamic world and the west when it comes to economic and political modernization. We're obviously just not on the same wavelengths when it comes to economic systems, or tolerance of religious differences. The reality is that the mideast is, in many ways, some 400 years behind the Western world and there is considerable impetus towards trying to turn back the clock and pursue glories, long past, and restoration of the Caliphate. Btw, I never bought into the "7 minutes to midnight" scenario. The "clock of destruction" was never an accurate metaphor for how the world was living, IMO. Because we could be living in peace for years, suggesting midnight was far away, but in an instance and with the turning of two keys in a missile silo, we could be instantly "warped" to mid-night.. I can't manage to think of a better metaphor at the moment (still on my first cup of coffee), but I can suggest that were the US to withdraw its nuclear umbrella, the likelihood of a nuclear exchange between two regional states sometime within the next 20 years, becomes extremely likely.
