Phil > Iran and Turkey Prepare for War in Iraqi Kurdistan I know as much or as little about this as anyone else but it has been my understanding that the event which will prompt Turkey's invasion of Northern Iraq will be the dissolution of Iraq into its constituent ethnic components. In other words, Turkey is happy to leave the Kurds of Iraq if they are a part of a greater Iraqi whole but will not tolerate an independent Kurdistan. Thus I'm not sure, as Debka says, that the presence of some Kurdish terrorists in the Qandil mountains will be the trigger event. Further, I'm not sure what Iran hopes to achieve in Northern Iraq because its major interest in Iraq is with the Shiites in the South and the Kurds do not make trouble in Iran. I have read that tacit neocon/Israeli plans for Iraq include its dissolution and the possible reconstitution of former "greater" Kurdistan from its Iraqi, Turkish and Iranian constituents. I'm sure you you know that, after WW1, Britain and France wiped Kurdistan off the map by breaking it up and incorporating parts into each of the neighbouring countries. It is this that has given rise to Kurdish terrorist activities, especially in Turkey, as the Kurds there agitate for independence. This is a pre-WW2 map akakurdistan.com And this is the map referred to by Debka zaman.com zaman.com Jews and Kurds are historic friends, even relatives, and Israel thus sees Kurdistan as its natural ally particularly if it means reopening the Kirkuk-Haifa oil pipeline. But Turkey and Israel are also friendly. Hence Turkey has warned Israel of the consequences of making trouble with the Kurds.
