Selling short an equal amount of long stock (selling short against the box) would put you in a market neutral position in regards to that stock, however you could delay any tax implications on the long stock you have been holding by simultaneously closing out both the long and short positions next year. You've reduced your risk down to zero right now but have put off the tax man until next year (or more).
