Aide Says He Warned Hastert Of Foley 2 Years Ago

(AP) WASHINGTON A senior congressional aide said Wednesday that he alerted the House Speaker Dennis Hastert's office in 2004 about worrisome conduct by former Rep. Mark Foley with teenage pages -- the earliest known alert to the GOP leadership.

Kirk Fordham told The Associated Press that when he was told about Foley's inappropriate behavior toward pages, he had "more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene."

The conversations took place long before the e-mail scandal broke, Fordham said, and at least a year earlier than members of the House GOP leadership have acknowledged.

Fordham resigned Wednesday as chief of staff to Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-N.Y.

Fordham spoke to the AP after ABC News quoted unidentified GOP sources as insinuating that he had intervened on behalf of Foley, his former boss, to prevent an inquiry into Foley's conduct.

"This is categorically false," Fordham said. "At no point ever did I ask anyone to block any inquiries into Foley's actions or behavior."

The longtime Capitol Hill aide said he would fully disclose to the FBI and the House ethics committee "any and all meetings and phone calls" regarding Foley's behavior that he had with senior staffers in the House leadership.

"The fact is even prior to the existence of the Foley e-mail exchanges I had more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene when I was informed of Mr. Foley's inappropriate behavior," Fordham said.

What are you suggesting about the 90 senators? If you think they convinced me, that's not true at all."

I am suggesting that they had the best available intelligence at the time. History tells us that it was weak from lack of human intelligence. Everyone knew that at the time.

I don't think you really understand the ramifications of what has happened during the past 3 years. Why? I will never know but let me spell it out for you. As you say, the intel was rather uncertain. By 1998, the weapon inspectors had gotten Saddam to get rid of 98% of his WMDs but then he kicked them out of the country. Bush began to push the issue in 1992. The weapons inspectors went back in and were reporting that they were finding nothing. They figure they would be done in a few months. Instead of waiting for their final results, Bush invaded Iraq almost as if he didn't want to hear there were no WMDs in Iraq for fear that it would take away his reason to invade. Frankly, given the circumstances, I think there are grounds for impeachment.

The fact that you are anti republican comes as no surprise to me. The words you have written have for years indicated that you wish to be thought of as a partisan's partisan. You have shown in the past that when you read words not written by a leftwing extremist you "read" them looking for a way to refute them or use them to promote leftwing extremism without ever considering their wisdom.

If you had been an independent like me and seen over the past six years what Bush and the GOP have done to this country.......the multiple wars, the alienation of our closest and longest standing allies, the incompetency, the huge increase in the national debt, the humongous budget deficits, the piles of pork, the level of corruption and the number of Republicans in trouble with the law, the response to Katrina, the threats to the USSC and democracy, Bush's inability to use diplomacy when dealing with the world, the tax cuts at a time of war, the arrogance, the lies and the partisan behavior......you too would have become anti Republican. In fact, its a testament to your over-the-top partisanship that you remain loyal to the GOP. And it has become clear that you put the GOP before your country. I would not be surprised if in a few days, you start defending Foley and blaming the Dems for his problems.
