So you considering the old autocrats not to be fascist, but the new dictators, or semi-democratic rulers are?

Yes, even though it's in many ways a case of "meet the new boss, same as the old boss," monarchs carry a type of authenticity based on tradition, and religion ("divine right of kings"), and a well established heirarchy of lesser nobles, all with complicated kinship structures which entail obligations that don't run only uphill.

It's hard for us, as 21st century Americans, to comprehend being born into a kinship system that requires us to support and defend people we scarcely know simply because of their blood relationship to us, or obligations taken on by our ancestors.

Democracy replaces that with individuality, fascism replaces individuality with obligatations that run only uphill.
