As far as I am aware, Chavez's claim of having a spy in the White House is unsubstantiated.

However, I am inclined to believe that there were American attempts on his life. As we all know, Venezuela is an oil-rich country and there is no denying that America has always been very interested in getting and controlling the oil of oil-rich countries. As Chavez has been critical of America and talking tough, and has forged alliances with China and Iran, he was and he is a marked man.

As a matter of fact, there was an American attempt to unseat him from power but it failed. Also, it was revealed that America had made plans to invade Venezuela soon after Saddam was toppled, but the Whitehouse denied such plans ever existed.

To be sure America would like to have Venezuela under its "thrall" and control for obvious politico-economic reasons.

By the way, lots of folks will do well to read KILLING HOPE by William Blum (a former high-ranking CIA man), ISBN 1-56751-252-6 (paperback) & ISBN 1-56751-253-4 (clothbound). This book tells of U.S. Military and C.I.A. Interventions since World War II. Check it out at amazon.com.
