Good post!

Be long or short the stock. Be long the stock and buy deep out of the money puts. Be short the stock and buy deep out of the money calls

Don't you want to buy calls when you are long on the stock, and buy protective put if you are bearish?

I am short substantial Jan 08 40 naked puts which I sold when the stock was at low 30's, and still above water. The proceed is there accumulating interest.

Based on the fact that companies thought it to be in their best interests to sue Qualcomm tells me a great deal. It tells me that they cannot compete with Qualcomm. They need to change the level of the playing field. They have tried but are coming to the realization that they are to far behind and need help from the courts to slow Qualcomm's huge advantage. The catalysts if Qualcomm is successful will propel the stock way beyond the current annual high.

Precisely, though I might put it a bit differently. Not only is Q itself a competitive threat, but it is also Q's empowerment of smaller players through its IPR program that has the large companies trembling.

And this is exactly why it is so hated and why so many suits and other barriers continously come up.

Bloomberg's latest article, suggesting that BRCM might be the winner in 3G if Q loses at the ITC, is only the latest in a long stream of FUD. The fact is that the BRCM case at the ITC is troublesome, to be sure, but hardly the company-breaking 3G monster of a case B'bg tries to make it appear.
