A-GPS is a more generic term, I believe. There is another company making A-GPS silicon and software for the GSM market: globallocate.com. It works great. Even inside buildings. These chips are installed in some of the HP PDAs, at least.

There were a large number of companies pitching BS solutions for the GSM, based on TOA (time of arrival) at the cell towers. It was a fantasy to fool the FCC, the siting of cell towers was different from the siting needed for TOA operation. It was amazing how long Cambridge Positioning, et al, were able to keep the fiction going.

It all went back to why the companies were putting the location information into the phone. If it was to meet a requirement of the FCC, then there was no actual need for it to work. But, if the corn-brains could recognize that it might enable a whole new class of, paid, services then the location system had to work.
