Yes, I think HP's % of sales to R&D used to be rather high and something they were proud of when I was there... now they are proud of how well they can count their beans. I decided a major career change was in order when I started to train experienced engineers in Singapore to "attempt" to do analog IC design R&D work that we used to hire and train graduates from Berkeley, MIT and Stanford to do. At times I miss the work but I enjoy what I do now also... I did optical communication component design, fiber optics then IrDA. The group I was in was spun off twice in the past 8 years... Agilent then Avago.... and I'm told by those there it has not been fun...
