IMO, this is year 1 for location-based services. What prior products lacked was the data link to the internet, and this is crucial. There were car navigation systems in Japan back in the early ‘90s, but they had no way to provide “current” information. There were two-way paging system, but these did not have ready access to the GPS position.

Having a robust GPS system in a mobile phone with a fast internet connection allows developers to create all the products that companies suggested could be available “someday.” Verizon’s application that gives turn-by-turn voice commands was, for me, the culmination of all the work in GPS over the last 17 years. I think it was a shot heard around the world by mobile operators.

This is why we’re seeing a knock-down, drag-out fight between the players. Yes, the market should be huge, and that’s why I read and post to this board.
