I hear you on this tragic situation in Darfur..

However, somehow I think the world is just willing to permit it to happen.

My feeling is that the West is losing its stomach for confronting Islamists, and then only half-heartedly..

Look at Afghanistan.. we're already seeing NATO members starting to hedge about their committments there as casualties mount.

And then we have Lebanon, where the UN can't even muster sufficient troop contributions to guard the border there, let alone disarm Hizbullah.

So I doubt there will be much appetite for taking on another mission where the UN is expected to guard a territory (Darfur) larger than Iraq against a militant Islamist tribal force. And let's not forget that Darfur's lack of infrastructure and lack of friendly port facilities, as well as their terrible road network, would make sustaining the operations of even a single division very problematic.

It's not going to happen without seeing scenes of the starvation and oppression being broadcast on CNN and the BBC every night..
