It's like using calculus to figure out the area under a graph - each bit is made so small that it's insignificant, but for some abstruse mathematical reason, it all adds up to the whole. Whoever is using your Globalstar phone, they are providing meaningful financial input. When the new ones are available [soon [meaning by the end of the year]], you should buy one and enjoy the much cheaper minutes that are now available and have the security of having coverage anywhere you go that you can see half the sky [some gaps notwithstanding as there are holes in the existing constellation].
