Fatah militants threaten to kill Hamas chiefs

FATAH militiamen yesterday threatened to assassinate three leaders of Hamas, adding fuel to the fire of Palestinian internal fighting.

The move came two days after the worst violence since Hamas's victory in January's elections.

A statement issued in the name of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades Militia said it held Said Siyam, the interior minister, Khaled Meshaal, Hamas's Syria-based political bureau chief, and Youssef Zahar, the head of Hamas paramilitaries in Gaza, responsible for the violence that killed 12 Palestinians and left more than 100 injured. It described the three as "those filthy people" and said they would be executed.

The violence began on Sunday in Gaza, where Hamas is stronger than Fatah, when Zahar's forces tried to stop security forces loyal to Fatah from blocking roads as part of a demonstration against the non-payment of salaries. It spread to the West Bank, where Fatah is stronger than Hamas, with Fatah gunmen shooting a restaurant worker in the head because he refused to strike, and attacking Hamas offices.

The surge in violence has been prompted by the inability of the two sides to reach an agreement on the terms for a national unity government.

Hamas says Fatah is trying to stage a coup d'état to reverse the results of the elections. "The renegades are implementing a foreign agenda," a Hamas statement said. Fatah accuses Hamas of destroying the Palestinian national project by not moderating its stance on recognising Israel, a posture that has led to an economic crisis caused by the halting of international assistance.
