They are in meltdown over this. They were totally blindsided, despite knowing it was out there, and they are doing a credible job of acting like chickens with their heads cut off. Probably they think it is brutally unfair, here they have been planning how to use their cash in the next few weeks to knock off enough Democrats to keep control, and this drops in their laps out of the blue.

The problem they have is this is something that isn't going to play well with a significant part of their base. It could very well have a damping effect on them, and that totally changes the election. Hence the pressure on Hastert to do something. Now the best would be for Hastert to accept the blame and resign. That would keep the taint on him and away from the party in general. But he won't do that. So the Republicans will continue to waterboard themselves.
