The rich people I've seen (in the news) driving a Prius are hypocrites. They park them next to their guzzlers secure behind their estate's gates and then they step into their 8000 to 20000 square foot climate controlled mansion spewing out thousands of additional pounds of carbon per year, surrounded by landscaping require tens of thousands of additional gallons of water per year.

But you are right -- it's about image -- looking like you are doing something about the environment.

I have seen perceptions changing though. I picked up my 12 y.o. daughter at a b-day party last weekend, and one of the other 12 y.o.'s saw my '91 Navajo (2-dr Explorer twin), and exclaimed, "You drive a HUGE car!" There are a lot of bigger models out there, so the comment was noteworthy to me. I've upgrading nearly all my energy systems, but that one is a hold back -- 15 gallons a month consumed, very low insurance for my teen, nearly free licensing, still runs great...
