Good question Paul. You'd think that two reasonable people would conclude the same, but we're talking about executives at large corporations being coached by lawyers - not exactly the ideal environment for rational thought/action/negotiation/agreement.

I think Slacker covered it pretty well in his (as usual, excellent) upstream post #4238; I would add that Nokia knows from past experience what they can/cannot get away with and have been positioning themselves for some time for leverage in these negotiations. I expect that this will continue and more pressure brought to bear on QUALCOMM, but that's just my WAG.

Part of this renegotiation is to reflect the fact that OFDM is ascending and CDMA declining; QUALCOMM has yet to concede that they are in a weak position in OFDM and will need to rely much more on chipmaking rather than IPR revenues in the future; that is a difficult and jagged pill to swallow, both for its management, as well as its shareholders....
