That was everyone's take at the time including Charlie's:

If 4x4 does turn out to be Socket-F then one can conclude that AMD either:

1) never specified the socket yet let the press run with the misconception for months that 4x4 was AM2 because AM2 sounded a lot better than Socket-F

2) they lied

or 3) 4x4 was little more than a knee-jerk marketing reaction to Intel's offerings at the time and AMD changed their mind on sockets between then and now.
