What we really need is to discover some technically advanced aliens that can be the basis of some good fear mongering! Fear of the Russians and wanting to possess the "high ground" was what got us going up there in the first place. I see a lot of technologies that can help us become spacefarers. Biologically modifing ourselves would be easier than terraforming planets or carrying all the stuff earthbound humans need. Astrocyborgs. Don't put the man in the starship, MAKE the man into the starship.
