We are neither one. If we had to settle international accounts in gold, we would be much like Argentina and would be in the middle of a huge inflation.

Why does the rest of the world keep financing our wasteful adventure in Iraq? Despite the antiAmerican rhetoric, is there some recognition that we are willing to go after tyrannical regimes and a willingness to let us do it?

I actually think (and all analogies are bad) that it's more like the way a bank is always ready to lend money to someone who is perceived as being rich and powerful.
