VOTERS ARE GOP'D OFF: POLL

October 6, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - Congressional Republicans reeling from disgraced former Rep. Mark Foley's unfolding cybersex scandal will next month face an outraged electorate that believes GOP chiefs protected Foley for years, a new poll shows.

The Rasmussen Reports survey found 61 percent of Americans say Republicans have been "protecting Foley for several years" - including 69 percent of the crucial independent voters who'll decide control of Congress.

Further threatening the GOP's control of the House and Senate, a new Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that voters by a nearly 2-to-1 margin say Democrats would be better at combating political corruption.
