production.investis.com this site has charts of energy production and consumption since 1965. It allows you to chart different regions of the world, products, and time periods. Quite obvious trends, but interesting to see in chart variations.

The fundamental analysis of any exploratory drilling prospect is source, seal, reservoir, and trap. Before a company invests in drilling these multi-million dollar wells there is a thorough analysis of where the oil or gas could be sourced. There are multitudes of papers discussing in detail thermal maturation and organic content of coal and shale to yield oil and gas in various plays. I have attached a link to a shale paper summary for example.

I find this discussion of abiotic oil an enormous waste of time and will try not to get pulled into it again.
