Bernanke doesn't need to be elected. If he wasn't reappointed due to speaking too much truth I think he would consider that a badge of honor. But how are you going to get politicians to do this in the current US system? Personal/household savings are of course only one part of total national savings. The media though focuses on this to the exclusion of everything else. Whether that is due to lack of knowledge or desire for dramatic headlines I don't know. It is a very misleading picture though of the saving situation of the country as a whole.
